HONG KONG, Sept. 8 -- About 300 Muslims staged a peaceful protest against racism in eastern China's Jiangsu Province amid signs of racial conflict spreading across the country from the riot-plagued Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, a human rights watchdog said Tuesday.

The Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy said the 300 Muslims, donning white outfits on which were printed slogans in Chinese saying ''Government must have integrity'' and ''No discrimination against ethnic minority,'' protested outside Jiangsu's Nanjing city government building for five hours Monday.

Hundreds of riot police were deployed in response and no conflicts were reported, the Hong Kong-based center said, quoting confirmation from two Nanjing officials.

The center said that following reports of a spate of syringe attacks in Xinjiang, discrimination against Muslims has happened frequently in Jiangsu and nearby Zhejiang Province. Such discrimination includes people on public buses avoiding Muslim passengers, taxis refusing to take Muslims and feasts being held in front of mosques and Muslims during Ramadan, the month-long fast from Aug. 21 to Sept. 19, it said.

A riot in Urumqi, Xinjiang's capital city, on July 5 between Uyghurs and Han Chinese left at least 197 people dead and about 1,700 injured.
