According to the Hong Kong Information Centre for Human Rights & Democracy (27 November), a Hong Kong-based fax service which reports on dissidence, protests and human rights violations in China, 26 November marks the first anniversary of the execution of Yang Jia, who was sentenced to death for murdering six Shanghai police officers. More than 100 Yang's relatives and netizens paid their respects at his grave in Beijing. Six police cars and dozens of public security officers were at the scene to monitor them. Considerable evidence shows that Yang's hatred against the police was bred by the 30-year-old police detachment officer Wu Yuhua, who was also injured during the Yang Jia incident. Wu Yuhua is a son of Wu Zhiming, who is the party secretary of the Shanghai commission for politics and law. On 29 August, the government for the first time confirmed that Wu Zhiming is a relative of Jiang Zemin's.
In a separate development, rumour had it yesterday that Li Peng is critically ill. However, retired officials and relatives of former state leaders hospitalized at the 301 Military Hospital and other Beijing hospitals cannot confirm this news.
