According to a report by the Hong Kong Information Centre for Human Rights and Democracy, authorities in Beihai in Guangxi Province in southern China on 9 May dispatched 500 armed police to arrest the village head of Baihutou, Xu Kun, who was elected by the villagers but not nominated by the government, leading to a clash with more than 1,000 villagers. Xu escaped with the help of villagers but 10 people including his mother and brother were injured in the clash. Xu has confronted the authorities on a number of cases to protect the interests and rights of villagers, the report said.
