China puts Tiananmen student leaders under house arrest

According to the Hong Kong Information Centre for Human Rights & Democracy (4 June), a Hong Kong-based fax service which reports on dissidence, protests and human rights violations in China, prominent dissidents Ma Shaofang and Guo Haifeng have disappeared since last night and are believed to be under the public security's house arrest.

Of the 21 student leaders of the 1989 pro-democracy movement, seven are still on the mainland, Wuer Kaixi is in Taiwan, and the other 13 are residing in the United States. Public security has placed noted student leaders under surveillance for fear that they would attend the '4 June' vigil in Hong Kong.
