HONG KONG, Dec. 24 -- A school van carrying 15 kindergarten pupils, a teacher and the driver in southeastern China's Jiangxi Province tipped over and fell into a pond Monday, killing at least 11, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency.
The report added the four other kindergartners are said to be in stable condition at hospital.
Xinhua said rescue officials were pumping water out of the pond, said to be 3 to 4 meters deep, to find any other victims.
The cause of the accident was not reported, but a human rights watchdog said the van with a capacity for seven was carrying 17 people when it ran into the water.
The van driver, Xinhua said, has been detained for questioning.
The Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy said ambulances arrived about 70 minutes after people called for help.
Photographs posted online show the rescue operation in process and a backpack apparently belonged to a schoolchild floating in the pond.
