According to the Hong Kong Information Centre for Human Rights & Democracy (2 September), a Hong Kong-based fax service which reports on dissidence, three children were killed and another three seriously injured in a collapse of a private sandpit at the Dazhao Village in Henan's Zhengping County. Because of the damage caused on local environment, the centre notes frequent conflicts between the private sandpit and local residents. The report says the residents are helpless as most of the sandpits are run by relatives of the county or township officials. From 31 August to 2 September, the centre says that hundreds of residents have continuously staged demonstrations in front of the county government calling for a shutdown of the sandpits and a check on environment damage.
